Obesity Crisis by alta-ego Obesity Crisis by alta-ego
Edit: Holy shit, people. I never expected to get any response to this. It's a poorly lit photo of a fat chick, and yet a bunch of people have commented, fav'd it, and more recently, a bunch of people have actually requested prints. A whole lot of them, actually! The first few I figured were flukes, but now there's a whole bundle of print requests sitting in my inbox.

Thank you so much for the fabulous comments and notes I'm still receiving. I'm making prints available, so if you're one of the people who requested them, enjoy!

---

So I got my height and weight from my doctor the other day when I went in for my physical. (For the record, I'm in perfect health; aside from a slight cold, I have great blood pressure, cholesterol, bone density, etc., etc.) Today I plugged those measurements into an online BMI calculator.

Guess what?

I am obese.

Not just a little obese, either. I have a BMI of 33.8. I could become morbidly obese just by eating a big enough breakfast.

Thirty. Fucking. Three.

Now I already knew that BMI measurements are flawed at best and complete crap at worst... but take a good look at that photo. That was taken of me a month or two ago. I haven't changed in height or weight since then.

The question is, then, do I fucking look obese to you? And since the majority of the (supposedly massive) population of overweight and obese people have a pretty good chance of being my size or smaller, is this really the crisis it's being made out to be?

Edit: Hey dudes, check it out--the comments have reasonable discussion in them! I was expecting to be told to go on a diet a lot more than I was. ;) Thank you for that.

That can't be possible, you do not look obese at all! In fact I'd only say you might be a little overweight, but...obese? No way hoz-ay.

Also if you want a better idea of whether you're "obese or not, try waist to height and waist to hip calculators :)
They're much better than BMI apparently.

I am so happy you're healthy :)
I would like to know though, are you afraid of getting obesity-related problems later? Or are you just not concerned?

Note that bmi doesn't care if you look obese or just overweight, it's a ratio of your weight (in kgs) divided by your height (in m) squared.

It changed in time and it becomes more and more certain that it isn't a good indicator of overall health.

No, you just have a cute little tummy! And a pretteh face. The obesity crisis is that they label it weird.

And your legs is nice. ^^
